Looking deeply into the political climate of Delta State, there are alot of permutations,on which Senatorial District the next Governor that will succeed His Excellency Sen Dr Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, whose second term in office will end in 2023 will come from.
However, the Central district of the state is highly favored by the vast majority of political elites and analysts, based on the existing zoning arrangements which the first civilian Governor of the state His Excellency Chief James Onanefe Ibori, under the present democratic governance instituted to ensure rotation of power among the three senatorial districts in Delta State.
The magnanimity of the erstwhile Governor,H.E Chief James Onanefe Ibori created a peaceful environment for the administration of the state, thereby making everyone to have a sense of belonging in the state, having allowed power rotation to Delta South Senatorial District at the end of his second tenure in 2007 and then moved to current Delta North Senatorial District in 2015.
Today,Delta Central Senatorial District is highly favoured to produced the next governor of the state,if the zoning of the state is strictly followed based on fairness, justice and equity, but the Central district needs to trend with caution not to take bag loaded with governorship aspirants to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party’s primaries,so that the hope of clinching the party ticket would not be dash by willful sabotage of sharing votes.
These noticeable challenges led to the formation of Delta Central 2023(DC-23) by reputable and patriotic leaders of Urhobo Nation within PDP,whose primary assignment is to ensure Urhobo of Delta Central Senatorial District produced the next governor of the state, lobby other Senatorial Districts to allow the existing power rotation through dialogue and consultations, put their house in order and agreed on a consensus aspirant before heading for the party primaries. These assignments, DC-23 leadership had selflessly and patriotically carried out,by going round, met various civil society groups, political pressure groups, sociocultural groups and political leaders across the three senatorial districts to preach a simple message of justice, fairness and equity in Delta State,
Interestingly,as part of the efforts for Urhobo to take their destiny into their hands and for the betterment of the generalities, DC-23 leadership set up a committee to prune down the numbers of aspirants within the party and the Committee pruned down the numbers to just five (5) aspirants, according to the report they summited to DC-23 leadership and they were further mandated to further reduce the numbers to just three Aspirants.
To me,this is the best way to secured the Peoples Democratic Party ticket, else we might end up losing everything to other Senatorial District.
I want to appeal to all our leaders, that everyone can’t become a governor at thesame time. All the aspirants who were screened out, must not pick offence at this sensitive time,we must not let our personal interest, override or jeopardized the chances of Delta Central in clinching the ruling party ticket in the state, hence majority of the Urhobo voters will queue behind any party that field Urhobo candidate from the opposition party in the state.
Finally, everyone is qualified among all the aspirants, screening you out doesn’t mean you don’t have what it takes to govern the state, but this is a matter of sacrificing one ambition in the interest of Urhobo Nation and put our heads together as a people with one mind, to win the race ahead.
May God Bless Urhobo Nation.
