Tech billionaire and now richest person in the world Elon Musk said on Twitter that he would sell some of his Tesla stock and donate $6 billion to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) if the UN could show exactly how the money would solve world hunger.
Musk’s tweet came in response to a CNN headline which claimed 2% of his wealth, which is now estimated to be around $300 billion, could eradicate global hunger, with the statement being attributed to the director of the UN WFP David Beasley.
After Musk tweeted his offer, Beasley replied that the CNN headline was misleading and what he actually said was that $6 billion would “prevent global political instability, mass migration and save 42 million people on the brink of starvation.”
Musk says he will pay up if the UN publishes their “current & proposed spending in detail so people can see exactly where the money goes,” with another tweet specifying that “it must be open source accounting, so the public sees precisely how the money is spent.”
